With these 50 cds we want to present a part of the music that was on the hit-record lists when
"our " particular brand of cars was on the market. And represented only a small per cent of total sales.
One can safely say that car productions was changed during the fifties, one man came forth and
changed music as well. Changed us all and gave us our youth one can say.
Since we are going to present the music through EAC, we have chosen to let Elvis be and rather look at
some artists that time have forgotten. Many of them were one hit wonders, others
were quite big, but only to disappear. Others again were popular actors that the fans demanded to make
records. One is Tab Hunter, who in 1957 topped Elvis`s "Loving You" with his "Young Love".And another
is Sal Mineo with "Start Movin",which was 19 weeks among the ten most sold records that year.
Most of the 174 artists on the cds are American, but we also have the first English rockers, like Tommy
Steele, Terry Dene, Marty Wilde, Cliff Richard and Billy Fury. The "Elton John"of the fifties was the Canadian Paul Anka, who wrote a string of popular songs, including his song "Diana".Wich is said to be one of the five most sold singles in the world. Ricky Nelson and Tommy Sands were both good singers and Ricky in particular gave us many hitsongs, like his "Hello Mary Lou" in 1961.
We could have said something about all the 174 artists on our cds, but would like to mention CD 9 called
"Frazer", named after the car Frazer. On this particular cd we have collected all the music by Norwegian
rockers that I had. Some of this may sound a little strange, but we must bear in mind that there was no
television and the radio had only one channel wich played classical music. There were no blues or rock
music in Norway at the time. These boys were real pioners! They had gained all there knowledge from Radio
Luxembourg and 2 or 3 rock movies. Rocke-Pelle had help from Sigurd Jansen and some of his musicians
and they called themselves "Sigurd Jansen and His Rockin`Five". Sigurd Jansen later told the magazine
"NÅ": We were to meet up wih someone who called himself Rocke-Pelle, but none of my musicians and
myself did not know what to expect. But Rocke-Pelle turned out to be really determined and knew exactly
what he wanted. And we played Rock for the first time!"
Another of the Norwegians, "Smiling Tommy"(Odd Gisløy) used Kjell Karlsen and his band and called
themselves "Kjells Rockin` Stars"`
The record-companies didn't believe in any of these artists and wouldn't release anything by them, but the
boys held concerts in Norway and abroad. And in 1958 Jordal Amfi in Oslo started having the "Scandinavian Rock Championship" Nearly 12 000 fans created an incredible atmosphere. In 1958 "Little Gerhard" from Sweden won in front of "Rocke-Pelle,and "Smiling Tommy" also did well. The new Norwegian Favourite Per "Elvis"Granberg did not so well, but he was to win in 1960. In 1959 it was Roald Stensby who made the head-lines in both Denmark and Sweden and he also won at Jordal Amfi that year. About the last two, we can mention that Jan Rohde released records until the end of the nineties and had big hits with his Jenka in 1965."Little Sophus "didn't release any records but featured in the documentary "Oslo, ungdommens by"
were he sang "Your`re Sixteen"(included on cd 21).
